What We Do

The Friends of Larkspur Library is a non-profit organization that raises funds to support many vital library needs, library programs, events, book collections, and library equipment. We strive to instill the love of reading and the thrill of learning in library patrons of all ages.

NEW LIBRARY GRAND OPENING / BOOK BRIGADE

The new Larkspur Library’s grand opening on March 28, 2025, was a joyful and exciting community celebration, kicked off by a book brigade organized by the Friends of Larkspur Library along with dedicated library supporters. More than 800 people formed a human chain, passing a final selection of 500 books one by one down historic Magnolia Avenue. Stretching nearly half a mile, the line connected the old downtown library to the new Larkspur Library at The Commons on Rose Lane. The event was vibrant and uplifting, bringing neighbors together in a truly memorable way. Library mascot “Larky” carried the final book to its new home, followed by remarks from local leaders and a ribbon-cutting led by Larkspur Mayor Stephanie Andre. For the first time, the library’s front doors opened, welcoming the community into a beautiful space with panoramic views of Mt. Tamalpais. Outside, attendees mingled and enjoyed city-sponsored food, activities, and the newly landscaped grounds. The book brigade was planned and made possible through a coalition of community groups, including the Friends of Larkspur Library, the Larkspur Library Board, the Larkspur Library Foundation, the Larkspur Community Foundation, the Library Director, a Rose Lane resident and of course, the community! With such widespread support, it’s clear this new library is more than just a building filled with books—it’s a powerful testament to what a community can achieve together.

Who’s Larky

Larky is a big gentle yellow hippopotamus who loves books and kids. He was adopted as Larkspur Library’s mascot more than 50 years ago. Larkspur schoolchildren voted on his name. An important part of Larkspur town tradition, Larky comes to many town and library events. Be sure to say hello the next time you see him!
